Why AVIF — and why not HEIC
AVIF and HEIC are close cousins: the same HEIF container, holding frames compressed by a modern video codec. The difference that matters is the codec's legal status. HEIC uses HEVC, which sits under commercial patent pools — the reason Windows charges for the codec and web browsers refuse to ship it. AVIF uses AV1, developed by the Alliance for Open Media explicitly to be royalty-free — the reason every current browser displays it. So AVIF gives you the HEIC-class compression Apple users already enjoy, or better, in a format the open web actually reads. That is also why this site converts from HEIC but neverto it, and happily encodes AVIF.
What to expect, honestly
Two things cost you something. First, time: AV1 compression is CPU-heavy, and it runs on your device (nothing is uploaded) — typically a few seconds per photo, longer for large, detailed images. The encoder here uses a fast speed preset on purpose; the marginal bytes saved by slower settings measured in the low single percents while costing several times the wait. Second, generation loss: your JPG is decoded and re-encoded lossily. At the default quality 50 that is hard to see on photos, while the size drop is usually large — and the row shows the exact measured number for your file rather than a banner claim.
The honest details
- Measured, not promised: every row shows real input bytes, real output bytes, and the computed percent change — including the rare "larger — keep your original".
- Quality slider only: no target-size mode on this lane, because a measured single encode of a detailed 12 MP photo takes ~5 seconds — a binary search over eight encodes would be dishonest UX. The Compress JPEG tool has the target-size mode, where encodes are fast.
- Wide-gamut colors flatten to sRGB: the same canvas behavior as every other converter on this site — highly saturated colors may mute very slightly.
- Metadata is stripped: EXIF — including GPS location — does not survive the re-encode. A privacy win for sharing; keep your originals.

Why convert JPG to AVIF at all?
Bytes. AVIF is the image form of the AV1 video codec, a generation ahead of JPEG’s 1992-era compression: at comparable visual quality an AVIF is usually a fraction of the JPEG’s size. Every row on this page shows the measured percent for your actual photo, because the honest number depends on the image.
How long does encoding take?
Typically a few seconds per photo, done entirely on your device — AVIF encoding is genuinely CPU-heavy, and this page states that up front instead of showing a fake progress bar. Small images are near-instant; a 12-megapixel photo can take several seconds. The row reports the actual time it took.
Which browsers and tools can open AVIF files?
All current major browsers display AVIF: Chrome and Edge, Firefox, and Safari 16.4 or newer. Most modern image viewers and editors read it too. Where AVIF still lags is older software and some upload forms — if a site rejects .avif, convert back with the AVIF to JPG tool.
Why is there no target-file-size mode on this page?
Because it would be slow enough to feel broken, and we measured before deciding. The target-size mode on the JPEG tools binary-searches by re-encoding up to eight times; a single AVIF encode of a detailed 12-megapixel photo takes around five seconds in the browser, so the search could run close to a minute per file. The quality slider is the honest control here.
Does converting JPG to AVIF lose quality?
It is a lossy re-encode of an already-lossy file, so yes, a generation is added — at the default quality 50 the difference is hard to see on photos while the size drop is large. What you cannot get back is detail JPEG already discarded; converting does not improve the image, it re-compresses it more efficiently.
